Pre-Med Club
Goal: To ensure local medical care continues and grows by thinking and acting prospectively.
What is the PRE-MED STUDENT CLUB?
The Pre-Med Student Club is a club created for local high school students who have a genuine interest in medicine. In order to meet our goal of attracting local physicians, medical students and residents to our area this club was designed to offer encouragement, guidance and mentoring to these students and to aid in their preparation for a career as a doctor.
Why have a Pre-Med Club in High School?
The Pembroke Regional Hospital, the Upper Ottawa Valley Medical Recruitment Committee, the Ontario Medical Association and local physicians recognize the disadvantages that rural origin students face to gain admission to medical school and achieve their goal of becoming a doctor. We also recognize the eagerness of these students to become informed on current medical issues, get first hand insight into the medical profession and make a difference in their community.
Most students don’t know what a medical career entails or the different possibilities/specialties in medicine, what the process entails to get there, or even where to start. Once they are informed, the process can seem overwhelming and discouraging.
A pre-med club to inform and provide mentorship is a necessity for any community, especially one that is underserved for many GP’s and specialists. It would help solve the afore mentioned problems, foster interest in medical learning early on and provide a means for future doctors to channel their medical interests to positively influence their peers’ health.
